AR Rahman, who has won both Grammy and Oscar awards, described the Bharat Maestro Awards as more than just a recognition program.

“The greatest joy of a guru is to witness the success and growth of their students. This award is not just a recognition but a bridge that unites us through the universal language of sound,” he said in a statement.

At its core, the awards emphasize the sacred bond between teachers and students, a cornerstone of Indian classical music. They aim to pay tribute to legendary musicians of the past while acknowledging the contributions of today’s icons.

The Bharat Maestro Awards feature six categories, including four awards for young musicians who have shown exceptional promise and dedication to their craft.

A Lifetime Achievement Award will honor a teacher whose contributions have significantly shaped the future of classical music, while a State Medallion will recognize an Indian state for its role in preserving and promoting classical music traditions.

Adding a unique and heartfelt element, the awards will be presented by gurus to their own students, symbolizing the essence of the Guru-Shishya Parampara.

Winners will also receive cash prizes and opportunities to perform on international platforms, including collaborations with Rahman himself, providing a global stage to showcase their talent.

The awards are guided by a distinguished mentor panel comprising music legends such as Asha Bhosle, Amjad Ali Khan, Bombay Jayashri, and Ajoy Chakrabarty. An advisory board of notable figures, including Ila Paliwal, Sai Shravanam, Bharat Bala, Fathima Rafiq, Khatija Rahman, Adam Greig, and Clint Valladares, ensures the initiative maintains the highest standards while embracing the diversity of Indian classical music.

The launch of the Bharat Maestro Awards coincides with a significant milestone for the KM Music Conservatory, which celebrates its 16th anniversary this year.

Founded by AR Rahman, the conservatory has become a renowned institution for nurturing musical talent, offering programs in both Western and Indian classical traditions as well as music technology. The institution’s mission has always been to provide world-class education while preserving India’s rich musical heritage.

Rahman highlighted the conservatory’s role in bridging the gap between tradition and modernity. “With this annual award, we hope to build an ecosystem that fosters immersive musical experiences while staying rooted in India’s cultural heritage,” he said.

Over the years, the conservatory has provided a platform for young artists to develop their craft while staying grounded in the cultural fabric of India.
